Wisdom in 2013 :: Proverbs 16:16

I could try to say that I am not much of the New Year's resolution type, but honestly, I am. It's fun to think about the possibilities that lie (lay?) in the year ahead. I'm really good at the dreaming and scheming part of making resolutions, it's the acting and doing part that gets me every time. By the second week of February I have largely forgotten what I wanted to resolve to do/change/eat.

This year I am not resolving in the usual sense. For a few years I have noticed other writers/bloggers adopting a word or "theme" for their year. The words are meaningful and challenging and end up acting as great jumping points for life changes, which is what resolutions are all about, anyway, right? I have seen people choose words like forgiveness, love, restraint, redeemed, finish.

After many days of thought and prayer, I have chosen wisdom for my word based on Proverbs 16:16 (NIV)

16 How much better to get wisdom than gold,
    to get insight rather than silver!
As someone who frequently speaks and acts before thinking, wisdom is at times, quite fleeting in my life.

It is my desire to seek wisdom in my actions, how I spend my time, who I spend my time with, what I spend my money on. I want to seek wisdom that one can only gain through Christ, not my own understanding.

Of course, as soon as I choose my word, I thought of a million others that would serve me just as well: faithful, gentle, commitment, honesty...but I am gonna stick with wisdom and consider that the first wise thing I've done all year.

*One Word 365 is a cool place to find out more about choosing a word, if you like the idea.

  1. Love it! I try to have a verse of the year, usually I don't hear it until March. This year, it came before Christmas: Philippians 2:3
